As part of Reception's topic ‘what happens in winter?’ the class found out that hedgehogs, bees, toads, bears, mice and bats all hibernate during the winter months.

To answer the question ‘what happens to birds in winter?’ Reception watched a short video and learned that some birds ‘migrate’ by flying away to a warm country during the colder months. The class discovered that other birds, who do not migrate, struggle to find food because the ground is hard with frost.

To help those struggling to find food, our children decided to make some bird feeders as a Christmas present from our school to the birds. To do this, the group firstly researched what birds like to eat on the internet and in books. After writing a list of food for the birds, Mrs Middlemas went to the shops to buy lard, birdseed, apples, raisins and cheese.

To make the feeders, the class tied string around pinecones and coated them in lard so that they were sticky, ready to be rolled in the food mixture.

When the birdfeeders were finished, Reception took their creations to our Secret Garden and hung them on the trees to wish the birds a happy Christmas!
