Year 6 kick the sugar!

This week Year 6 became expert dieticians as they examined the nutritional content of a range of processed foods, from packet 'pasta ‘n sauce' to pasties.

The children recapped the importance of a healthy lifestyle and diet, before discussing the issues raised by processing food.

"There are both good and bad points about processing food. Pros of processed foods include convenience and availability. Cons include a lack of nutrients and unhealthy ingredients" explained Simon.

Isaac was shocked to read about the sugar levels in one can of Coca-Cola, saying "I know that children of our age are only allowed 24g of sugar a day. Just one can of coke puts our sugar levels way over this before we even eat anything!"

Despite some children enjoying some of these foods in small quantities, all Year 6 pupils saw the benefit of saying no to heavily processed foods and instead focusing on having a healthy, well-balanced diet.
