Pupils visited Diamond Hall Junior School in Sunderland last week to learn about the Rights Respecting School Award that their school is aiming to achieve.
Pupils from Diamond Hall explained what the award was and summarised the United Nations Convention on the rights of the child. They explained the convention was adopted in 1989 and sets out the human rights of children everywhere. They looked at the 42 articles that make up the convention before taking part in a needs and wants activity.
A set of cards were introduced to the children helping them to understand their rights whilst making them consider the difference between a WANT and a NEED. The activity got us all thinking and sparked a very exciting debate on the bus back to school.
The Rights Respecting Schools Award puts children’s rights at the heart of schools. Unicef works with schools to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. At Browney, we would like to work towards achieving the award too.
Diamond Hall is in the process of joining the North East Learning Trust and we look forward to working with them more in the future - thanks for having us!
